After learning that they had lost RHP Michael Pineda for the season due to a labrum tear in his right shoulder, the Yankees were in need of a "pick me up."  They didn't get it from Phil Hughes last night.

The Yankees lost the rubber game of their three-game series against the Texas Rangers, 7-3.  Robbie Ross picked up his fourth win of the season in relief after coming into the game in the for Scott Feldman, who was making a spot start.  Ross pitched 2 2/3 perfect innings with two strikeouts.  Hughes picked up the loss, going just 2 2/3 innings, giving up four runs on five hits and two hits batsmen.

Adrian Beltre was the big bat for the Rangers, going 3-5 with a HR and three RBI.  Raul Ibanez had two hits and two RBIs for the Yankees while Mark Teixeira and Derek Jeter also had two hits for New York. Jeter's season average now sits at .420.

After retiring seven of the first eight hitters (allowing a solo HR by Adrian Beltre in the second inning), Hughes imploded in the third inning.  Hughes gave up four hits in the inning and hit two batters, leading to three Rangers run.  Clay Rapada had to come in with the bases loaded to finish the inning.

Meanwhile, the Yankees offense scattered eight hits.  They scored two runs in the fourth inning on a Raul Ibanez ground rule RBI double and a Eric Chavez sacrifice fly.  Ibanez would add a solo HR in the seventh inning for all the Yankees offense.

Five Yankee relievers combined to pitch the final 6 1/3 innings.  Luckily, the Yankees have an off day before they face the Detroit Tigers Friday at Yankee Stadium, giving the bullpen time to rest.

With players getting rid of the rust in preparation for the 2012 season, it is the time known as “Prospect Season”. It is that time of year once again where the fans and organizations get to see what their prospects have to offer. This is the time where all the baseball writers, bloggers, and organizations begin to rank all the prospects accordingly.

Last year, the Yankees farm ranked anywhere from #4-#7 on the organizational rankings throughout baseball, pretty good for being near dead-last the past decade. This year they look to continue that as they come into the baseball season with a seemingly strong farm system. Though ranked decently high on the organizational rankings, the bombers farm system took a bit of a hit this past off-season because of the big Michael Pineda/Jesus Montero trade with the Mariners.

Jesus Montero was the Yanks star hitting prospect by a decent margin. Although Montero was a big prospect atop the Yankees prospect list, the trade did not knock them that far down. I’d say they currently sit in the #6-#8 spots in the 2012 organizational rankings.

This year we will be putting out our very own Top 30 Prospect List which will include the players name, ranking, and age. The list will be available throughout the season for those who wish to browse through it.

Yes, Yu Darvish would have looked nice in pinstripes, and is seemingly off to a great start. Yu is 2-0 with a 3.75 ERA, with 14 strikeouts and 13 walks in 19 IP. However, as Dave Cameron outlines, Yu Darvish is struggling with the same command issues that other hyped up Japanese pitchers such as Daisuke Matsuzaka have dealt with in the past: serious control issues.

 Happy We Passed on Yu?

Yankees fans will get their first look at Yu Darvish Tuesday

Rob Neyer of SBNation suggests that Yu Darvish like other Japanese pitchers recognizes there is a marked improvement in the average quality of the MLB hitter as compared to the average quality of the hitter in the Japanese league, and is therefore "afraid" to throw strikes.

Darvish has only thrown first pitch strikes to batters just 48% of the time this year, which is very surprising considering that was his strength over in Japan, boasting very low walk rates and pounded the zone at all times. Because of this, I believe Yu Darvish is just feeling out MLB hitters and "has the stuff", but is just learning to trust it still.

A Yankee in Any Location

By budjames · Comments (0)

Living in the greater Chicago Area I take a whole lot of grief from Cubs fans and White Sox fans that I encounter on a daily basis. I am a transplant from the east coast, Scranton Pennsylvania to be exact where I put on my first pinstripes as a 3 year old. Since that day way back when I have been true blue, a pinstriper all the way. One of my childhood memories is watching my very first baseball game ever on a color TV during the 1964 World Series when we went up against the St Louis Cardinals and lost in 7 games. That day my Mom, an even bigger and more intense Yankee fan than anyone could imagine had this great idea that I should watch the game at our neighbor's house and they had a color TV. My memory of that day was a snow storm on the screen as the reception was so poor you couldn't see which team was on the field. I remember hearing the call of mantle's homerun of Barney Shultz that day but never saw the ball fly through the air. That memory is one that lasts in my auditory canals to this day. The Yankees were a part of who I was from those early days so to try to explain it to Chicago fans is an exercise which borders on the bizarre. They can't possibly understand what it is like to be born a winner in the year of 1956, a Triple Crown Year and a perfect game year . They have only endured a legacy of losing mostly by the northsiders, near misses and a couple of flukes by the White Sox. It is like trying to talk your way out of jail, everyone goes back to what they believe is the evidence which they believe, that the Yankees have bought championships since they have been in existence. Those of us who have lived through the "Yellow Submarine Days" of 1965, 66, etc. and saw the rebirth of the championship years with the later 70's know the truth. So every day is a defense of many years of trials and tribulations and the saving of the traditions that took place through my lifetime. What do they know anyway! So here I am in the dank, dreary and usually chilly midwest wearing my Yankee hat, my Yankee gloves and hat in winter, driving my decal laden auto and being another proud Yankee fan out of the territory. But wait, am I really out of order living in a land of losing teams? Maybe not. Every once in a while I lock eyes onto an ally who locks on to me at the same time and we befriend each other with a comment about Jeter or ARod or talk about when we last made a trip to the Bronx. It is a rough time but it does happen from time to time and then when it does it always happens at least two more times in that given day, always in threes.
So another season has begun and I left my 2011 version of my Yankee hat at the feet of St. Damien in a church in Hawaii where I spent spring vacation. I proudly took my new 2012 hat and placed it on my head on opening day 2012, got on my bike, rode to the Metra Electric Train that takes me to the University of Chicago and entered into another year of walking through the streets of Chicago showing my allegiance to the greatest sports franchise ever. I am forever a Yankee no matter which part of the country I reside in. I can't wait for my first trip to "Comiskey Park" I still call it that where I will venture into enemy territory and take any lumps that are dished my way. My true reward will be later this year when I walk through the Great Hall and sense that I am really home again, just like the very day back in September of 1966 when I took my seat in Section 7 at the Stadium. The grass really is greener in NY!

Michael Pineda on May 10%2C 2011 %281%29 Michael Pineda to Yankees Official
Welcome to the Bronx Michael. Now earn your 'stripes!

Just days after the trade rumors became "official" that Michael Pineda would become a Bronx Bomber, the Yankees add Pineda to their rotation.

Jesus Montero was one of my favorite players, even before arriving to the big leagues, and I've expressed my love for home in totality here. It's a shame Jesus is gone, however, we now get one of the premier pitchers in the game on our team.

Being a bit too young to watch the developments of the late "Core Four", this will be my first real chance to try and see a legitimate potential superstar develop right in front of my eyes. Well, scratch that- Jesus Montero was first, but Brian Cashman- well never mind.

More to come on Pineda in the coming days, but for now, like or dislike the trade?

alg yankees rivera Remembering the 2011 Season

Mariano Rivera caps off his chase to become the "All Time Saves Leader".

Mariano Rivera had an incredible 2011 season. While he managed to scare some people into thinking he was finally hitting his "decline", he managed to grind it out and have yet another all star season and accomplish reaching and passing Trevor Hoffman for sole control of the all time saves record.

It's an accomplishment we may not see competed against for decades from now. Congratulations Mariano Rivera. Here's to a successful 2012 and beyond for "The Great One". Until 2012, see some of the cool items to help you remember Mo's great achievement, if you weren't able to be there in person.
